— 27 May
What Happened
A male passenger jumped overboard from Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas on May 26, 2024, just one day into his 7-night Western Caribbean cruise.
The incident occurred approximately 300 miles from Miami and 30-40 miles north of Santa Lucia, Cuba.
The ship's crew immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard and launched a search and rescue operation.
After a two-hour search, the man was rescued and brought back onboard.
Passenger's Condition and Identity
The passenger is currently in critical condition in the ship's onboard intensive care unit.
His identity and full prognosis have been kept confidential to protect the privacy of the passenger and his loved ones.
It's unclear what prompted the man to jump.
Impact on the Cruise
The Icon of the Seas' itinerary has not been affected by the delay.
The ship is expected to arrive in Roatan, Honduras, on time on the morning of Monday, May 27.
The ship will also call on Costa Maya, Mexico; Cozumel, Mexico; and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas before returning to Miami on June 1.
Recent Overboard Situations from Royal Caribbean Ships
This is not the first time in recent months that a Royal Caribbean ship has handled a man-overboard emergency.
In October 2023, Symphony of the Seas successfully rescued a person who went overboard off the west coast of Spain.
Unfortunately, other recent incidents have ended in tragedy.
In April 2024, a 20-year-old man fell overboard from Liberty of the Seas and was not found after a six-day search.
In December 2023, a 41-year-old male passenger fell overboard from Vision of the Seas and was also not found.
In August 2023, a passenger went overboard from Wonder of the Seas but was never found.
Conclusion
The Icon of the Seas passenger is lucky to be alive after jumping overboard.
The ship's crew and the U.S. Coast Guard acted quickly and efficiently to rescue the man.
Unfortunately, not all man-overboard incidents have a happy ending.
Royal Caribbean has a good safety record, but these incidents are a reminder that accidents can happen.
